Lowered Expectations

I was speaking to someone this morning about the whole “expectations” thing; you know, when you have this idea of the way something will be and the bottom drops out when reality hits?

Yeah, I think we have all been there.

I was reminded of the old MAD TV parodies of a dating service and the ideal / reality of what you’d actually find out there. I was going to link a video but they really aren’t appropriate! The point is, we would be far better off to lower or eliminate expectations in much of our lives all together.

So what is the solution? Good question. No really, that is a really great question that could be answered with never, ever, have any expectations, or just somehow temper them so we don’t find ourselves going down the drain of shattered dreams. I deal with this from time to time in my life as I am sure you do as well. We have hoped against hope for a certain situational outcome, or reaction, or encouragement and support, and it just isn’t there.

Putting our hope in people to meet our expectations will always end in disappointment.

If you think about it, we have all failed to live up to someone else’s expectations, and the inevitable result is hard feelings, separation, doubt, guilt, depression, anger, etc. God alone, who doesn’t waver in His boundless love for us isn’t swayed by selfishness, flights of emotion, or unfair judgments that are typified by man and his whims. He brings truth with love. He sometimes punishes, corrects, guides, nurtures, but He always draws us close with His grace and mercy.

God remembered us when we were down,
    His love never quits.
Rescued us from the trampling boot,
    His love never quits.
Takes care of everyone in time of need.
    His love never quits.
Thank God, who did it all!
His love never quits! Psalm 136:23-26 (msg)

I have placed unfair and unrealistic expectations on people, and outcomes; so I am refocusing my vision on the one who never fails and is ever-present. No one and nothing can compare to you, oh how I need you Jesus!

Where would I be
If it wasn’t for your kindness toward me
You’ve been closer than a friend could ever be
There is nothing on the earth
That could take your place
I am undone
For you see all there was and all that will be
Yet you’ve set your vast affection upon me
By your voice the world was made
And still you called my name

Who can compare to you
Who moves my heart the way you do
Who can compare to you
Who moves my heart the way you do

Kingdoms come and kingdoms fade
But always you remain
Ages pass and seasons change
But always you remain (the same)
