Easy to say, sometimes harder to do.
I have been thinking about what never giving up really looks like. With love itself being so fragile and so often damaged, to never give up shouldn’t be a flippantly uttered declaration.
We all have experienced moments in which love has been nearly extinguished, we have been in love and fallen out of it, we have given our hearts and had them cruelly crushed.
So how do we rebound from such devastation and never give up loving?
How do we learn to love when we haven’t had the ability to love in the past?
As I read 1st Corinthians 13:8, I see that love never gives up; and there is only one perfect example in all of history who exemplifies this core characteristic.
9-10 “I’ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you’ll remain intimately at home in my love. That’s what I’ve done—kept my Father’s commands and made myself at home in his love.
11-15 “I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.
16 “You didn’t choose me, remember; I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won’t spoil. As fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father in relation to me, he gives you.
17 “But remember the root command: Love one another. John 15:9-17 (MSG)
Here’s the breakdown:
- Keep God’s commandments
- Love one another as He loves us
- Live with joy
- Lay your life down for your friends
- Know that we are chosen of God, we are His friends
- Bear fruit
- Again, love one another
We are loved, as Jesus was loved by the Father, now, lets love one another with a love like that. His love for us Never Gives Up!
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV)
