Men-Beware the Fine Print!

I was watching TV the other day and a commercial came on for an automobile company. Here come the glitzy images of fast cars racing around and looking awesome. All of them red and all with every option available; beautiful settings and gorgeous people driving them. Powerful, driving music pumps while you watch and the adrenalin starts to flow as you imagine yourself in that car, looking that good!

The thing is, I was trying to read the fine print, (which is made to be unreadable) and I caught something very interesting. None of the cars in the commercial were a part of the sale or incentives; they were next years models. Yeah, there may be deals, but they aren’t for what you are watching on-screen. It is a classic sales ploy which isn’t anything new at all.

Reminds me of the devil and his old tricks; the problem is that we keep falling for them!

Men, we are some of the most readily susceptible to this ploy, owing it to no small fact that much of our struggles lie with our “eye-gates.” We are visual, and the lure of something fast and sexy can be irresistible for us sometimes. Lets take a moment and consider what we are getting when we sign that contract.

This is where it gets real. The statistics are undeniable, though many would like to discredit them. The number of men who have signed a blind contract and given themselves to the devil and find themselves in the grip of pornography would shock you; 50-70% of men, in the church, battle with porn. It doesn’t matter if it’s once a month or 10 times a day it’s still something that has a hold on you. That slick image that originally caused you to sign on the dotted line has incurred a cost you never fully realized until it was too late. The availability of porn is ridiculous, and it is tempting, and sensual, it promises highs like you’ve never experienced before, satisfaction that you not only want, but as they say, deserve.

Now for the truth of the matter. All that promise is a textbook case of “bait and switch”, but you have probably already figured that out. Every day becomes preoccupied with secrets, hiding, lust, anxiety, worry, fear, depression, lies, anger, fixation and more. This is a contract you need to break before it goes even further than you could imagine. The question is…how?

If you’ve struggled for any length of time you already have attempted to be free, possibly with little or no success. I speak of what I know here, so let me share a few suggestions.

  • Find a spiritual leader or friend you can trust and be real with
  • Install an internet Filter or blocker to control content, such as Covenant Eyes.
  • Get connected with a ministry that deals with this issue and has resources available like Pure Desire Ministries.
  • Prioritize prayer and Bible study
  • Have a Day Away With God, (DAWG) leave technology at home. bring a Bible and notepad, and find a quiet place to reflect and meditate and hear what God is saying. Porn drowns out the “still small voice.”
  • Break the isolation that promotes opportunities for temptation

I have learned something important; just as we have gotten into habitual patterns that are destructive through a single act, we can begin to find our way to freedom in the same way. What will it take to start the process to freedom? A sudden and tragic revelation by a wife or loved one, such as forgetting to delete that website history?

Tear up the devils contract; burn it, shred it and begin to find the way back to transparency, wholeness and truth,  You were lied to and deceived, so that contract was never even valid. Restoration with God is the real promise that is being offered to you and there aren’t any tricks, mark ups or hidden cost’s! Freedom in Christ is a lifetime contract and He will honor it.

Will you?

Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. Romans 6:9-14
